D.I.Y. Magnetic & Dry Erase Message Board

So there was this long empty wall in my home-office.  The first thing that came to my mind was to hang a message board there. I wanted to be able to write messages, pin invites, organize coupons and display inspirational quotes each week.

Since we have little kids,  I thought sharp push wouldn’t be safe.  Therefore decided it would have to be a magnetic board.  Since my office is long and narrow shaped, I decided that the board would have to merge into the wall by being the same as the wall color and using overall light neutral shades, this way the room will stay light and airy.

We gathered some tools… and away we went!

  1. We got 2’x4′ steel sheet, marked and drilled holes in it so we can attach the sheet directly to the wall.
  2. Then we deburred, sanded, filed and cleaned the surface before applying the paint. It took few coats until we reached the desired shade (letting the surface to dry in between the paint applications).

3. Applied a coat of dry erase clear paint.

4. Screwed the sheet onto the wall using as many screws as it took to avoid  the metal bowing out.  We tried to hit as many studs as possible, where we couldn’t we used drywall anchors.

5. We used some scrap wood to make a rustic looking frame and attached it directly onto the wall using pegs to cover the holes.  We’ve achieved the weathered look by first making a slurry of white vinegar and steel wool.  Once the mixture had time to react you simply brush it on any wood and let it sit.  The more tannins in the wood the quicker and more pronounced the rapid aging effect appears.  Next we beat up the frame, cut it and burnt it.  Then we cut some left over paint with mineral spirits and white washed the frame.
